Funboard design - April 2005

Project:
I’ve always wanted to design my own snowboard, from the first day I stood on a snowboard. The snowboard has been around for almost 40 years, and I believe there could be more variations than the existing snowboard, ski’s and mini ski’s. I wanted to design a flexible easy to play with and fun board to go down the mountain with.
Team:
This design was done together with my colleague from 469design, Guus Baggermans.
Date:
This project was started in early 2005, and has been tested twice since it was build, tested in Austria at 3200 meters.
Results:
The prototype was build using plywood layers and bent into position, in order to get the stance I wanted, slightly bend on the tail and nose. After the plywood was bend and glued together I started on the foot steps, made from wood and connected to the main wooden frame using super glue. I’ve also constructed a metal frame for the bindings to connect. These are welded on the inside of the foot stances. The finishing of this board is fibreglass’s layer and a couple of paint layers.

The next visual shows the Flow bindings attached, these standard of the shelve bindings fit on the metal frame I built into the board.

Any type of binding could be connected to the board, which allows snowboarders to use their existing material with this funboard.

The last step before testing the board is of course waxing it with the standard snowboard wax, to minimize the resistance when riding the snow.
