Sneak Preview #2: Over the Hedge

The curtains open, I see the dreamworks logo, and the first thing that goes through my mind is: No not another animation movie! And yes, there is a squirrel in there that talks so fast, nobody can follow what he’s rambling about. And yes, there are also animals available that can only say one word, and that’s supposed to be funny….

But what a laugh I had watching this movie. It looks great, the voices are great, and the humor is of such a caliber that it suits all ages. It has the feel of an old cartoon, with things happening quickly after each other. But at the same time it also gets you hooked on the characters emotions, that are conveyed perfectly through the cutting edge 3d animations.

From a designers’ point of view, and especially a graphics designers’ point of view, this movie is fantastic. Everybody who has had a serious go at a 3d software package must have experimented with fur, or at least tried this. This movie is the first movie in which it was actually believable. Combine that with global illumination, radiosity, depth of field, HDR, and every other cutting edge technology you can imagine. The crispness of every frame is unseen of, and combine that with the richness of the environment, and you have a visual spectacle that keeps you clamped to the screen untill the end.

All in all, it’s a new killer from Dreamworks Animation. It certainly brings back the quality of Shrek after the wake of shark-tale. It doesn’t matter if you’re going to watch this with your girlfriend, or with your girlfriends little brother, it’s a movie must see for the whole family!
